Alice Springs Train Service
Alice Springs is a small town located in the Northern Territory of Australia. With an estimated population of 26,486 (in 2005), it is the second-largest settlement in the Territory (the only other towns of significant size are Darwin, the capital, and Katherine). Locally called "the Alice" or simply "Alice", it is almost equidistant between Darwin and Adelaide. A well-connected Alice Springs Train Service makes the passenger and freight travel to and from the place fairly simple. In 1929, the original Ghan railway was extended from Adelaide to Stuart. In the 1980s, there an attempt was made to start a direct rail service from Sydney by the named train The Alice (Train) however it only lasted four years. Alice Springs is now the midpoint of the Adelaide-Darwin Railway.
Alice Springs-Darwin Rail Line, Australia
This is a fairly recent 1,420km (880-mile) line between Alice Springs and Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory that completed ahead of schedule on September 17 2003. This major flagship project aimed at completing the national rail network by connecting Darwin with the south of the country and thus creating a freight land bridge to Asia and the rest of the world.
By using this line, the journey times between Adelaide and Darwin is around 40 hours and approximately 3 million tones of freight is transferred by this line every year. Each train can handle 250 double-stacked containers and will be powered by 4,000hp diesel locomotives
