River Festival Brisbane
Brisbane is often referred to as the most live able city in Australia. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland and brims with style. The city is famous for world-class theatre, great shopping, vibrant markets, sophisticated art galleries, and gourmet restaurants. The city celebrates a number of festivals. The River Festival is one such important event in the Brisbane Calendar celebrated with much pomp and grandeur.
The Brisbane River runs through the heart of the city and is an integral part of the city's identity. The River festival is celebrated every year with a 10 day programme that takes place across various locations across the city. Programs range from exhibitions, live musical events, theater performances and sporting events. The festivities get underway on the opening night with “Riverfire – a spectacular fireworks display over the river.
The River Festival in Brisbane is an international waterways event celebrating Australia's river city. The banks of the river come alive with a sea of people, live music and attractive stalls. Visitors can pick up art and crafts, plants and flowers, food and drink. They also have the option of simply watching everything from the gently rocking deck of a boat on the water. The River fireworks are held on the first Saturday of the festival every year which is Queensland's biggest pyrotechnic display and a festival favourite. The ‘River Feast' is the ultimate outdoor dining experience and one should certainly not miss this if you attend the River Festival. The International River symposium, another attraction of the festival, was first held in 1998 and usually takes place in the middle of the week.
In addition to the several attractions at the Brisbane River Festival such as the Great Brisbane Duck Race, concerts, walks, and regattas, a new event was introduced in 2006. This event is known as the Bunya to the Bay in which an intrepid group of up to 30 junior secondary students plan to make a 16-day river journey along the Brisbane River, starting from its source in the Bunya Mountains down to the mouth of Moreton Bay.
The travelers at each step of their journey speak to the communities and schools in a series of celebration events and also conduct experiments surveys and educational activities reporting on the health of the river. This is not only an adventure for the kids, but also an extremely creative way to highlight the plight of the river.| Hotels in Brisbane | |
