The Buddha Birthday Festival is celebrated usually on the first week of May on the South Bank Parklands in Brisbane. The place usually comes alive with colour and in celebration of the festival. The festival is more popularly known as Vesak or Visakah Puja – Buddha Day held each year usually around the first full moon in May except for a leap year when it is held in June. This day is said to be the most significant day of all Buddhist celebrations held throughout the year since it celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha, which transpired over 2,500 years ago.

This festival like most other Buddhist festivals is a time for great joy and tradition. The festival was held for the first time in 1997 and has attained enormous success with attendance doubling every year. International visitors also attend the festival in large numbers. Some of the events held during the Buddha Birthday Festival in Brisbane are Lion and Dragon Dances, Chinese Acrobatic Performances, a Fun and Food Fair, Bathing Buddha Ceremony, an Arts Exhibition, Buddhist talks and free Meditation sessions among many others. The festival offers a glance to experience the Buddhist religion and festival to most non Buddhist persons.

A different theme is adopted every year at the Buddha Birthday Festival every year to promote peace and harmony among all generations and cultures and also to tackle prevalent social issues such as racism. In 1997, theme of the festival was ‘Hansonism'. The theme for the 2006 festival was “Harmony in Diversity�.
