Commissariat Store

Commissariat Store

The Commissariat Store at Brisbane was built in 1828 by convict labor. The top floor was primarily used for storing grains. Another story was added in 1913 though the tablet giving the old date remains till today.

The convict period ended and then the building used for storing various records and also as a hostel for immigrants. The Commissariat Store at Brisbane has a chequered history and all of it has been well preserved in the museum that it has become today. Now it is also the headquarters of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland.

Particulars of the Commissariat Store

The building was made of porphyry or tuff that was obtained from a quarry at Kangaroo Point. The dressings were done in sandstone acquired from another quarry near the Albion Park Racecourse. This particular section is the oldest building in the whole of Queensland. The top brick storey was added and the roof was refurbished in 1913.

The part of the Commissariat on the river side acted as a gateway that led top the infant colony. The guards and the prisoners would pass this building to reach the other buildings in the settlement. There is also a park beside the Commissariat stores. This was developed by the State Government and the place was named after Lieutenant Miller who was the first Commandant of the Colony.
