Canberra Governance
The capital city of Australia, Canberra is the largest inland city of the country. It is home to a population of just over 325,000. Canberra is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory. Canberra was chosen as the site for the capital city of the country as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne in 1908. Since then the city has been the centre for all important governance in the country and for the locals as well. Canberra Governance has always been an exemplified system that has paved the way for better administration in the city. One of the highlights of the Canberra Governance is the fact that it is the seat for the government of Australia. Canberra is also the home for the prestigious Parliament House, the High Court of Australia and numerous government departments and agencies. The federal capital of Australia has the largest percentage contribution to the Gross State Product and is the largest employer in Canberra.
The Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly, the chief governing body in Canberra, performs the roles of both the city council and territory government. There are 17 members in the Assembly elected from three districts with proportionate representation. The three districts are Molongolo, Gininderra and Brindabella. The Governance is run by the members among whom the Chief Minister is the head of the administration along with four elected MLA's.
Other important Governance authorities in the territory are the National Capital Authority, responsible for Planning and Development and Australian Federal Police.
