Golf as a sport was mentioned first in Netherlands in a city called Loenen aan de Vecht. Where the sport actually originated, however, is a disputed fact. The Dutch say that golf is there tradition, as do the Chinese, while the British Isles claim to have played the game for five centuries. This popular form of sport which nowadays has unofficially become the favored sport of the business world is played world wide and Australia is no exception.

Golf is very popular in Australia and its oldest golf course was built in Bothwell in the year 1839. This course was used privately by a Scotsman Alexander Reid and it was established as a golf club on in 1902. The honor of being the oldest golf club however goes to The Australian Golf Club in Sydney and the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The Australian Golf Club was founded in 1882 but lost its course and resumed function only in 1895. Royal Melbourne was founded in 1891 and thus it claims to be the oldest   -  continuous club  -  . Overseeing all golf related activities is the national governing body of golf in Australia called Golf Australia. Golf Australia seeks to raise the level of interest and participation in the game from grassroots golfers through to the elite levels, spectators, volunteers and associated industry bodies.
