Rugby football (also referred to as rugby) is said to have its origins in a common form of football developed by the Rugby school in England. Rugby union, rugby league, American football and Canadian football all share the same root.

Features common to both rugby league and rugby union are that the spheroid ball and the rule against passing the ball forward. A player can only run with the ball or kick the ball to move the ball forward.

Rugby union football is often referred to as simply rugby or union is played by teams of 15 players with an oval ball. Rugby union has established itself as a popular game in many countries especially in Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Tonga, and Wales.

In Australia the governing body of rugby union is the Australian Rugby Union (ARU). Founded in 1949 it is a member of the International Rugby Board (IRB) the sport's governing body and is also for the Australia national rugby union team.

One of the best known teams from Canberra are the ACT Brumbies or the Brumbies who represent the Australian Capital Territory and the New South Wales region in the Super 14 competition, the highest level of provincial rugby in Australia.

Canberra Stadium is one of the most favored venues for nation al and international Rugby championships.
