Blundells Cottage Canberra

Blundells Cottage Canberra

Blundells' Cottage, Canberra was built in 1859 as a home for workers on the Duntroon Estate, which was occupied by a number of families for over hundred years. William Ginn the head ploughman was the first occupant, followed by the newly-weds George and Flora Blundell, after whom the cottage was named. A testimony of the European spirit of leading the way, and breaking ground in a new, unknown place can be had from this historical site.

Blundells' Cottage, Canberra lies near the Lake Burley Griffin, and initially consisted of four rooms, with a separate slab building kitchen. It was expanded around 1890 to take in two back rooms. The Cottage roof was originally made of wooden shingles but was recast with corrugated iron at the time of extension.

Blundells' Cottage, Canberra was made a museum in 1964 and tells the history of the cottage and of the time when Canberra was not the national capital. There is available a guided tour of the cottage, where one can get to know about the rooms and their artifacts. Blundells' Cottage, Canberra is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am till 11.30am and 12pm till 4pm excluding Christmas Day and public holidays. Admission is free.
