One of the well-known festivals of Darwin in the month of September is the Saltwater Fly Fishing Challenge, Darwin.
Darwin Flyrodders Club organizes the Saltwater Fly Fishing Challenge, Darwin in the month of September at the Bynoe Harbour, close to Darwin. This is a measure-and-release contest, where the angler's intention and challenge is to catch every one of the seven target species of fish - the queen fish, trevally, mackerel, barramundi, tarpon, snapper and salmon. Anglers have only three days to fly fish. On per boat, there are just two people and both must be competitors. They compete as a team and on an individual basis. For the capture of each species bonus points are accumulate and the fish caught are scored on a centimeter-per-point basis.

The Saltwater Fly Fishing Challenge, Darwin has been organized for the previous four years at Bynoe Harbour and has attracted numerous interstate and local fly fishers. In 2002, the Darwin Flyrodders Club was taking over the organization of this successful competition.
