A popular tourist attraction of Hobart that is worth paying a visit is Runnymede. Runnymede, Hobart is a beautiful historical house located in the southern part of the city.

Runnymede, Hobart is a colonial house built in the year 1837. This is a two-storied elegant looking mansion or bungalow that overlooks the New Town. This huge mansion is fine example of colonial architecture.

The bungalow is surrounded by a beautiful looking garden, which is also doubles up as a major tourist attraction of this port city. The garden is teems with a great number of flowering plants and trees, some dating back to ancient times. One can see a large number of fruit bearing trees and flowers like roses, fuchsias, hellebores, bulbs and other types of flowers here.

Runnymede in Hobart has a distinct history of its own, which makes it one of the most important historical sites of the city. The bungalow was built for a gentleman named Robert Pitcairn. He was the first lawyer who played a leading role in the campaign against the deportation of convicts from Britain. At that time, this magnificent lodge was known as Cairn Lodge. In the year 1850, this house became the residence of the Anglican Bishop. He added the music rooms to this abode. The music room was used for a large number of religious services and other events.

In the year 1864, the house became the residence of a sea captain called Charles Bayley. The captain changed the name of the house from Cairn Lodge to Runnymede, after his favorite ship. The Bayley family continued to live in this house for a period of 100 years. In the year 1967, the state acquired the possession of the house and it was eventually handed over to the National Trust. Thereafter extensive renovation work was carried out which restored its 19th century look.

Runnymede, Hobart is one of the most attractive tourist sites of Tasmania. Visiting hours are from 10:00 in the morning till 4:30 in the evening on all days of the week. On Saturdays and Sundays it opens at 12 noon. It remains closed on Good Friday and Christmas day. One has to purchase tickets to see this beautiful house.

Runnymede, Hobart with its marvelous garden and colonial beauty is a real treat for the eyes. Located on Bay Road, it is visited by a large number of people everyday.
