Sun Theatre Melbourne
The Sun Theatre - Originally inaugurated in 1938, the Sun Theatre was a 1050 seat cinema and the most luxurious in the area. It became a Greek cinema in the 60's and then closed for twenty years in the late 70's. Later it operated as Melbourne's most popular film society functioning only on weekends.Today it is a multiplex of sorts with 4 screens. It took no less than 8 months of construction, and a couple of years of planning before that, to come up with the Sun Theatre as it is today, redefining cinema watching experience. At present, The Sun Theatre features 4 Boutique Art Deco Cinemas.
Adhering to the saying of Rock Kirby, the visionary founder of Village, who strongly believed, - there are three ingredients that made a great cinema - SSS - Seating, Screens and Sound - - Sun Theatres have made it the foundation of their services, adding Style to it as well. Thus the prime - mantra - of success of Sun Theatre as a premier theatre of Australia is - SSS - - making it Melbourne's best cinema outing.
Art Deco Style: The current Sun Theatre consists of three new cinemas added to the original auditorium. However, the word - new - does not mean that additions were made to the original structure, rather 4-screen boutique cinema were created out of the original 1050 seats, Art Deco architecture auditorium.
Seating and leg room: Sun Theatre features club seating with a shared coffee table and ample leg space - got from different parts of the country, and fully refurbished with new swanky suede upholstery
Screens and Sound: The entire layout and shape of the cinemas has been diligently worked out around the screen to maintain the image size, proportion and picture and sound quality.
Two new cinemas of Sun Theatre
- La Scala - Enter the most splendid theatrette in Melbourne, fitted with 50 luxuriously luscious leather sofas and designer chairs surrounded by original artworks. Named after the original La Scala Italian Film Cinema in Footscray, this cinema is elegance personified.
- Davis - Equally stunning is the cinemaette of Davis fitted with 100 traditional style seats and furnished in an art deco inspired scheme that is a treat for senses. Christened after Brian Davis, a local cinema legend, he was the projectionist at the Sun for many years until he purchased the Grand cinema in Footscray.
