Newcastle Airport

Air links to the city of New Castle have been provided by the Newcastle Airport which services a number of commercial flights. This Newcastle Airport, better known as Williamtown Airport is located at a distance of 20 km from the center of Newcastle City in New South Wales province of Australia. Often deemed a military airfield as it shares its runways with RAAF Base Williamtown, the Newcastle Airport allows for commercial flights. Civilian flights have been made possible to enhance the connectivity of Newcastle City with the rest of the country. The excellent administration and governance of the Newcastle Airport has won it the Regional Airport of the Year 2005 award, granted by the Australian Airlines and Airports Industry. The governance and administration of the Newcastle Williamtown Airport lies with Newcastle Airport Limited, a joint committee composed of Newcastle City Council & Port Stephens Council members. The Newcastle Airport Limited has been awarded a lease contract by the Federal Government to facilitate civilian air traffic in the region. The contract duration is 40 years and was entered into on June 2005. The air terminal at the Newcastle Airport has undergone a major upgradation and the facilities have been revamped to facilitate commercial requirements. The burgeoning air traffic and higher security needs have commissioned such a project. This upgradation commenced on 9th November 2005.

Even as early as the 1990s the low cost airline company, Impulse Airlines, started operations in the Newcastle Airport making way for the other airlines to enter the foray.
