Miss Porter's House in Newcastle

Miss Porter's House in Newcastle

Originally built by Herbert Porter way back in 1909, Miss Porter's House in Newcastle is a rare museum where you can catch up with a by-gone era.

From a house to the museum called Miss Porter's House, Newcastle:
Miss Hazel Porter, the last survivor of the Porter family and also the last and final owner of the house, willed the property to Australia's National Trust as she wished that the house be maintained without redeveloping or restructuring it. Obeying her wish, the house was taken over by the National Trust after Miss Porter passed away in 1997, when she was 83 years old. The house was then turned into a museum, keeping it the way the Porters left it.

The Story of the Porters:
The Porters were a quite and peaceful family who survived in the 20th Century in Newcastle. As Herbert Porter, the head of the family passed away in 1941, there were only his two young daughters and his widow who lived in the house.
As the years passed by, the family continued to stay in the greatly done-up house. Quite naturally, Miss Porter's House in Newcastle had all the personal possessions and rare and fine household items that the family carefully collected and used over the years. Hence, Miss Hazel Porter, who spent her entire life here, decided that she would bequeath the building to the National Trust, who would maintain it without redeveloping the property any further.

Miss Porter's House, Newcastle, Australia, Now:

A very rare museum in Australia, Miss Porters House, Newcastle is a classic example of the houses in the early 20th century. As you open the front door, an entrance hallway will take to the sitting area on the right, furnished with crocodile velvet couches, wooden coffee tables and an expensive carpet of 1930s on the floor. The free standing terrace, built by Herbert Porter in Edwardian style still stands steady, without being changed much.
Beside the building, Miss Porter's House in Newcastle also stores treasured possessions of the family that include everything from choicest fabrics, fine linens, colorful crockery and other daily household goods.
