This particular place is the site where the Coast Defence Fort was located and is in a position that has a stance of being in command. Its main purpose was to guard the estuary of the Hunter River. It was twice renovated being built in 1882, firstly being modernized in the year 1892 and the second time in the year 1910.
This particular site has witnessed the pinnacle of the Australian coast defence from the loading of its guns. Fort Scratchley, Newcastle in Australia remains to be the only Australian Coastal Fort to have attacked on an enemy warship.
