Nobbys Head
Nobbys Head is a lighthouse, which was established in 1854. Before that, it was a small isolated coastal island. Nobbys Head was only the third lighthouse built in New South Wales. The first two were the Macquarie Light in 1818 and the Hornby Light that was also built in 1857.
New South Wales holds lighthouses built in variety of styles, used in over the last 180 years. Many of the New South Wales lighthouses have a common appearance. For that reason, they are easily identifiable. These all being designed by the colonial architect, called James Barnet in New South Wales. In 1821, oil burning light in a large metal device was established that was visible for 12 kilometers. The oil light was not reliable for that the lighthouse changed the coal fire once again. This light was attached by three keepers and was demanned in 1935. Then it was changed to electric light. Originally known as Coal Island, the Newcastle's famous Nobbys Head Light, has stood guard over the harbor entrance for 150 years. Now it has become an attraction for the tourist.
You will be able to visit the spectacular lighthouse by submitting $1.2 million to the Newcastle City Council. In the Nobbys Head you can get accommodation in the light keeper's cottages. It is a 50-seat restaurant and takeaway shop, in Newcastle. As Nobbys Head is still an active lighthouse, that allowed safe public access, without interfering in the operations of the harbor. Among these, 3 cottages were previously used by corporation personnel. Now, those will be converted to eight eco-friendly accommodation units. Another building next to the lighthouse will be converted glass-sided restaurant. Weather and environmental aspects of Nobbys Head are planned for the public viewing platform on the restaurant roof. The platform also allows the public to enjoy the view without going on the edge.
You can access Nobbys Head by walking across the break wall, or traveling by minibus or Newcastle's famous tram.
