Waratah Park Sydney

Waratah Park Sydney

Waratah Park is a wildlife sanctuary located about half an hour’s drive from Sydney. Waratah Park was founded with the vision of restoring the teeming wildlife of Sydney as it was prior to the arrival of the Europeans. The idea of having a sanctuary for the native Australian animals was actuated by the fact that most of these animals had dwindled in terms of numbers.

Some of the animals that one may find in Waratah Park are kangaroos, bettongs, water rats, native ducks, glider possums, ringtail possums, brush tail possums and rare Pademelons and wallabies. Waratah Park has some endangered animals which are not found any where else in the world.

Waratah Park was once home to Skippy, the much loved kangaroo who featured in the eponymous serial in Australia. Visitors can still see the descendants of Skippy in the Waratah Park. The set for the serial is a popular among the visitors.

Visitors have to embark on guided tours to survey the Waratah Park. These tours are lead by sanctuary ranger guides who provide wonderful information on the life in the Australian bush. Visitors are imparted knowledge on the traditional Aboriginal medicine, food and legends.

Though Waratah Park opens daily at 10 am, the wildlife tour by spotlight is announced by the setting of the sun. This is because many of the animals in Waratah Park are nocturnal by nature.
