This farm cottage stands on the first land grant in the country done way back in the eighteenth century. The land was allotted by the then Governor Phillip to an ex convict James Ruse.In a couple of year's time the former convict was able to convert the thirty acres of land allotted to him into a land that produced a number of crops. This farm was called or rather is called an experiment farm cottage because it was an effort of a former convict to provide food and shelter to his near and dear ones by toiling his own land.
The Indian style bungalow perhaps a symbol of self sufficiency was built by a surgeon named John Harris who had purchased the land from the former convict for a sum of ?40.
