Entertainments
In the history of entertainments in Sydney, this theme park wrote its name on 7th December, 1985. The Wonderland Sydney was the largest Theme Park in Australia which was established with the financial help of the government of New South Wales. Previously it was known as Australia’s Wonderland. There were three themes within the park when it was opened for the first time. The Goldrush, the Medieval Faeire and the Hanna-Barbera Land were the three themes that comprised of he rides and attractions of different types. The Hanna-Barbera Land was based on the different characters from Hanna-Barbera which today is known as the Cartoon Network Studios. The shows shown here were those of Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear and the Flinstones. This Wonderland Sydney was built keeping in mind the model of Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto as both were constructed by the Taft Broadcasting.
The Bush Beast was one of the rides of this park which was the most famous wooden roller coaster of Australia. After sometime the park included rides such as Demon and Space Probe. The Beastie was another ride which was half the size of Bush Beast and was meant only for the young riders. The water park in Wonderland was known as the Beach which was started in 1988. This special attraction of the theme park remained closed in the months of April to September which were the winter months.
Several amusement rides were present that was a source of entertainment for everyone. Some of the rides were:
- Antique Autos – it had an electric track and Ford Model T cars used to ride through beautiful sceneries.
- Bounty's Revenge – this was a pirate ship that could accommodate 50 riders together.
- Dragon's Flight
- Fred Flinstone's Splashdown
- Galleon's Graveyard
- Great Balloon Race
- HMS Endeavour
- Jousting Ring
- Little Monsters Flying School
- Magilla Gorilla's Flotillas – which was a small lake that consisted of paddle boats.
- Ned Kelly's Getaway
With the passage of time, the popularity of this park began to diminish. The park was actually making no profits and hence it was sold in the year 1997 to the Sunway Group of Kuala Lumpur. The park was not expanded to a good extent even after this step was taken and was facing heavy loses. Hence it was finally decided to close the park and 25th April 2004 was the closing date of this park. Some of the rides were sold to other amusement parks and others were just destroyed.
