Chatswood: Introduction

Located in the state of New South Wales, Chatswood is a suburb in North Shore in Sydney. Chatswood is also the head quarter of the city of Willoughby local government area.

Chatswood is located no further than 10 km from the main commercial area in Sydney. It is the most important commercial and retail suburb of the North Shore district.

Chatswood: History

Chatswood owes its name to Charlotte (Chattie) Hartnett, second wife of Richard Harnett, who was the city pioneer and the Mayor of Willoughby. Chatwoods' transformation from a land used for timber and farming into a proper settlement took place from 1876 with the establishment of a residential estate. The introduction of North Shore railway line in 1890 accelerated the growth.

Chatswood: Transport

Chatswood station is placed along the North Shore Line. It has train services to Richmond, Penrith, Epping, Parramatta and others.

Chatswood also has a bus terminus with regular traffic to Bondi Junction, Sydney, North Sydney, Mosman, Balmoral Beach, Manly, Warringah Mall/Brookvale, Belrose, Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Eastwood, Gladesville, West Ryde, North Ryde, Macquarie University, Macquarie Park, Parramatta and Dundas.

Shopping in Chatswood

Shopping in Chatswood has been split into two distinct styles, engendered by two groups of shoppers- locals and those from the North-Shore.

The North Shore shoppers do not usually stray from their favorites which happen to be Chatswood Chase and Chatswood Westfield- the former built in 1988 has K-mart, Coles, and over 120 specialty stores, while the latter has Target store, Cole, Myer and a cinema complex.

Spring Festival in Chatswood

The Spring festival in Chatswood is usually held in September or October every year. The festival kicks off a month of celebration which includes speeches, live music/entertainment, shops and many more. The Spring festival is the second largest in Lower Northern Sydney and brings to the fore the colorful multi cultural society of Chatswood.
