Parramatta: History

Founded in the same year as Sydney in 1788, Parramatta was originally inhabited by the Darug people. The Darugs used to call the area Baramada or Burramatta. Food was considered abundant in the area, with the forest and the river being the ever replenishing source.
In January 1788 Governor Arthur Philip decided to lay off his wearisome hunt for a prospective site for a settlement when he narrowed down on Parramatta. He decided to build a farm here with the help of thousand convicts.

The name Parramatta comes from the Darug word- Baramada, which means 'the place where the eels lie down'.

Governor Arthur Philip had himself built a small house on the picturesque Rose Hill and a second one in 1799. The second house was used as a retreat by Governors who followed later till 1850s. The house, now called 'Old Government House', is still extant and is held as the oldest surviving pubic building in Australia.
