The Queen Victoria Building was built in the year 1898. It was designed by the famous architect George McRae. The site on which the building now stands was initially home to the George Street Market. Extensive renovations were carried out in the year 1970 to restore the original grandeur of the building. The entire building is 190 meters long and 30 meters wide. Over the year the building has undergone extensive changes to meet the needs of changing times. The concert hall was converted into a municipal library and the offices of the Sydney City Council.

The building has a huge glass dome in the center with a copper sheath on the outside. There are large windows with stained glass and one can also get to see a cartwheel window, which depicts the ancient arms of the City of Sydney. The building is a grand example of Victorian architecture. Inside the building one can find two large mechanical clocks, a life sized figure of Queen Victoria in her coronation attire and an Imperial Chinese bridal carriage made of jade. Outside the building one can find a wishing well featuring a bronze statue of Queen Victoria's dog 'Islay ' On the southern end of the building one can find a statue of Queen Victoria.
