Ancient Observatory, Beijing was known as the 'Platform of Star Watching' during the Ming Dynasty but later the name was changed to 'Observatory' during the Qing Dynasty. The name was further changed to 'Central Observatory' after the revolution of 1911. After its renovation in 1980, the Observatory has become the, 'Beijing Ancient Astronomical Display Hall'.

Ancient Observatory, Beijing is divided into two parts the platform and the affiliated building. The platform of Ancient Observatory is (58.4 feet) high, 24 meters (about 78.7 feet) long and 20 meters (about 65.6 feet) wide. Ornately carved eight bronzed astronomical instruments stand on this platform and have been well preserved since the time of the Qing Dynasty. You can see the influence of Oriental craftsmanship and European Renaissance understanding of measurements and physics in the design of these instruments. Built with elegance stand a group of affiliated buildings under the platform.
