The History of Pixian Wangcong Singing Match

The origine of Pixian Wangcong Singing Match dates back to the time of Qing dynasty. Two respected lords of the Situan province Du Yu an Bie Ling were worshipped during the reign of Quing emperors. In accordance with the seasonal cycle worship services took place twice a year in spring and in autumn. The Springtime worshipping was aimed to a successful ploughing . It was held on the third day of third lunar month according to Chinese calendar. The worshipping service of Spring fell on the 9th day of 9th lunar month and marked the harvest. After finishing reaping activities farmers had enough time to cultivate their musical aptitude. In relaxed mood they would gather outside the Wangcong Temple voicing their "shouting folk song". The singing style is notable for its antiphonal feature where one person begins the song and others join him chorus resounding the words sung by the main singer. The songs were composed with the intention of pleasing gods while some young people expressed their heartfelt emotions through songs. Farmers expected a rewarding harvest by singing the glory of gods. With the course of time the tradition of " Shouting Folk Songs" evolved as Pixian Wangcong Singing Match.
