The economically prosperous town of Shenzhen is located in the Pearl River Delta which flows into the South China Sea. The municipality stretches for an area of about 2020 sq. kilometers including within its territory both urban as well as rural areas. The population of Shenzhen is 13 million. As a marine territory, that is primarily subtropical, Shenzhen experiences hot summers and non-tropical winters.

Northwest of the city, at a distance of about 200 kilometers, is its resort counterpart of Zhuhai – which translates into Pearl Sea in Chinese. Zhuhai is positioned on the border shared between China and Hong Kong SAR across the Sham Chun (or Shenzhen, as it was known in the olden times) and the Sha Tau Kok rivers.
