Watching movies is a popular form of amusement among the people of Xian. Come weekends and the Cinemas in Xian are marked by long queues of families in varying numbers. There are little over thirty Cinemas in Xian. Watching a Cinema in Xian is quite an inexpensive affair, with the ticket costing not more than 20 to 30 Yuan.

It is disheartening a fact that not too many English movies are shown in the halls and even those few that do get shown come with Chinese dubbings.

Some of the names of the popular Cinemas in Xian are- Cinema bell tower, The Palace Cinema, City Lian Worker's Cultural Palace, Worker's Cultural Palace of small residence, Red to imprison cinema and Children cinema. Hongguang Cinema is the largest of the Cinemas in Xian.

Chinese Cinemas are extremely popular in Xian. In the wake of the success received by the movie Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon, Chinese Cinema has caught the notice of international audience. The reason for the recent resurgence of Chinese Cinema is attributed to the collapsing of inherent boundaries between Mainland Chinese Cinema and more international Chinese-language cinema.

During the initial years, Chinese Movies achieved quite a phenomenal success until the Japan invaded China. The invasion caused many of the directors to relocate towards Hong Kong. After the war Chinese movies then came under the heavy handedness of the Communist rule and grew under great scrutiny.

The present era in Chinese movies belongs to the sixth generation of movies and a deep division exists between these movies and the movies of the era that preceded them. Most of the earlier movies were known to be melodramatic, romantic and having a suburban setting. One of main handicaps faced by Chinese movies is that the movies are extremely localized.
