Xian, the capital city of the Shaanxi Province, boasts of a whole range of interesting places and tourist attractions. The Straw Hut Temple, Xian is one such significant tourist site in the city of Xian.

This temple is also popularly known as Caotang Temple. It was found in 1855 in the Tang Dynasty. Located in the Caotangying Village of the Huxian County, this temple is a very sacred place especially for the Buddhists. It was here where Kumarajiva, an eminent Buddhist master interpreted Buddhist scriptures and also transformed sutras from Sanskrit to Chinese. After his death, his ashes were buried in a seven feet tall stupa which is richly carved.

Within the Straw Hut Temple, Xian , you will get to see the Kumarajiva Dagoba or valuable art works. The Baohui Buddhist Master Preaching Inscription is the original script of the great calligraphist Liu Gongquan. Inside the temple premises, there is a well which at times gives off mists. This is one of the most popular sites in the whole of Shaanxi Province. Legend says that there is a stone on one side inside the well on which when a snake lies, mists emit. But scientifically, it can be due to the geothermal vapor inside the well. A marvelous pavilion has been constructed over the well and was given the name ‘Misty Well'.

The temple remains open from 8 am to 6 pm. The entrance charge is CNY 10. You can board a bus from Bus Station which will directly take you to the Straw Hut Temple, Xian.
