Located right on the top of Montmartre that is the highest peak in Paris, Sacre Coeur is a famous roman catholic church. The church is dedicated to the Sacred Heart and derives its name from there. It was formally consecrated in 1919. The prestigious architect Paul Abadie designed the beautiful basilica and the architecture reflects Romano Byzantine influence. This basilica is not a parish church but is an independent structure.
The place where the church is situated was the site where the city's patron, Saint Denis, was beheaded in the third century.


The building structure: The building is white in color and is a beautiful spectacle. It is built in travertine stone. The church complex comprises of the main building, and a beautiful garden for meditation. You can climb up right to the top of the dome to have a great view of the entire city. The golden mosaics glow in the dim interior creating a lovely light. You can also see the Blessed Sacrament on display on the high altar.


The ambience of the church is absolutely peaceful and the pilgrims will feel themselves to be in direct communion with God. Those interested can also make their contribution to the renovation of the church, however small be it. The place has been a favorite among tourists apart from being a popular religious destination.


Admission charge: You can enter the church free of cost. However, if you want to climb up to dome, you will have to pay a nominal charge of 4.50 pound.


When to go to the Sacre Coeur, Paris: The church remains open from 6am to 11pm. The crypt is open to public view from 9am 6pm daily.

How to reach Sacre Coeur, Paris: You can reach the basilica by Montmartrobus bearing the numbers 30, 54, 80 and 85. You can also ride to the place by metro.
