Berlin is the capital city and one of the sixteen states of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is located in the northeastern part of Germany and is the heart of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. Berlin is the largest city in Germany and the second most populous city in the European Union.

The city is home to more than 50 theaters. Some of the popular theaters include The Deutsches Theater in Mitte which was built in 1849-50. The theater was operated continuously ever since it was built except for a one year break in 1944-45 due to the Second World War. Another theather, the The Volksbühne on Rosa Luxemburg Platz was built in 1913-14 though the company was in existence since 1890. The Berliner Ensemble is famous for performing the works of Bertolt Brecht established in 1949 not far from the Deutsches Theater. The Schaubühne was founded in 1962 in a building in Kreuzberg, but moved in 1981 to the building of the former Universum Cinema on Kurfürstendamm.

The city of Berlin boasts of some of the most diverse and vibrant nightlife scenes in Europe. There are numerous music clubs that offer entertainment every evening.
