Skiing in Berlin
Skiing is the act of gliding over snow using skis. The skis are usually made up of wooden planks or fiberglass or both. Skiing was originally done for the purpose of transportation but now it is a popular recreational activity. Skiing evolved from snowshoeing and was a convenient way of getting from one place to another in the cold winter months. Sondre Norheim is called the "father of modern skiing". In the 19th century Sondre Norheim invented the bindings with the help of which a skier can turn and topple. Norheim named this kind of skiing as Slahom which means difficult task. This form of skiing is now called Telemark skiing. Skiing is a major sport in the Winter Olympic Games.
Though Berlin is not a conventional destination for winter sports, there are several winter sports centers in Berlin. The "Gletscher" that has the longest indoor slope is a great place to be in if you are into skiing. Those who want to enjoy ice-skating will have the opportunity to do so here. Ice skaters have ample opportunity to ski in Berlin. There are both indoor and outdoor ice-skating rinks here in Berlin. Some of them are set up on the boulevards itself. So, do not be surprised to find young boys and girls zooming past you with their skates on.
During the winters, many of the lakes in Berlin freezes. This provides great opportunity for skaters. There are some Ice-skating schools in Berlin. These schools run workshops for amateurs as well as impart specialized knowledge on ice skating. More and more young boys and girls are coming into this sport. Most of the schools and colleges provide indoor ice skating rinks. All these schools hire coaches to train the young. On the whole the sport of skiing is flourishing in Berlin.
