The Olympic stadium is a sports stadium in Berlin. There have been two stadiums at this site. The current Olympic stadium was originally built in 1936 for the Summer Olympics. There were skirmishes in the building that were the result of the fallout of World War 2. This building was also used as military headquarters after the war. The 2006 football World Cup final was played in this stadium. Werner March had originally designed the architecture of this building. Renowned American sprinter Jesse Owens had won 4 gold medals here at the Olympics in the year 1936. Today, one of the avenues leading to the ground bears the great runner's name. Since 1985, the German Cup Final has been played in the stadium, which received a facelift prior to hosting three games in the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
As preparation for the 2006 world cup there have been many stadiums that have been built. The existing ones were rebuilt and renovated. There have been huge expenditures incurred in this process. Total costs are estimated to be around 1.4 billion Euros. Financing was done by the 12 German host cities, the federal government and the state governments as well as by private investors. Private investors include the football clubs that own various stadiums. To round up one can say that sports as a whole is shinning bright in Berlin.
