Holocaust Memorial Berlin
A memorial to the Jewish victims of the one of the most regrettable moments in modern history, Holocaust Memorial in Berlin is also known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.
Designed by the visionary architect Peter Eisenman, the Holocaust Memorial covers an area of 19,000 square meter, which is chiefly covered by 2,711 solid slabs or stelae. The Stelae are laid on a sloping field in a gird design. The length of each stelae is 2.38 m, the breadth is .95 m with a variable height of .2 m to 4.8 m. The object of this haphazard scattering of Stelae, as per the project text, was to inject an atmosphere of chaos; Eisenman meant to convey disruption of order by human interposition. This was challenged by the Foundation for the Memorial's official English pamphlet for the tourist released in 2005. The pamphlet said that Eisenman had not employed any symbolism but that the stelae were the radical perspective to the conventional idea of memorials.
The construction of Holocaust Memorial, Berlin commenced in April, 2003 and was declared completed in December, 2005. The Memorial was inaugurated amidst great fan fare in May, 2005 and two days later the Memorial was made public. The complete construction of Holocaust Memorial took €25 million.
Holocaust Memorial receives hordes of visitors every year. It is said that in its very first year it received over 3.5 million visitors.
Holocaust Memorial is open to public visit at anytime of the day or night. There is an underground Information Center at the end of the memorial which provides real life tales of those who face the brunt of Nazi's brutality; it also furnishes information on the details of the memorial. The Information center is opens at 10 am and closes at 8 in the evening.
