The Museum of Indian art has merged with the Museum of East Asian Art and together they operate under the name of museum of Asian art. This change took place last year after the meeting of the board of the Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage. This unification has been done to maximize the usage of resources and use them as efficiently as possible.

A brief description about the collection

This museum houses some of the most important collections from the Indo-Asian cultural area starting from the 4th millennium BC to the present. The regions which this place generally covers include the large geographic region next to India are Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Autonomous Regions Tibet and Xinjiang of the People's Republic of China, the Southeast Asian countries of Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, including the Indonesian Islands.

All the three religions which were born out of this region are well documented in the museum and this includes the three important regions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. These include the outstanding stone sculptures, relief, and bronze work and terra cotta pieces. The rich iconography of images that are there in the museum could be the best outside the Indian sub continent. All in all a must see place for an art lover Indian or otherwise.

Collection of East Asian Art

In these galleries the arts of China, Japan and Korea are shown and the exhibits which are present revolve around the Buddhist religion and culture that is common to all three countries. There are explicit examples of Chinese archaeology in the form of ancient bronzes, early ceramics and objects made of jade plus there are porcelain and lacquer work for people to drool over. There are some sections that are dedicated to painting and calligraphy and to complete the spectacle there is a Japanese tea room also.
