The Freiberg Cathedral in Germany, one of the greatest attractions of Freiberg, is a Lutheran church. Built in and around 1180, the Freiberg Cathedral is a richly decorated cathedral that attracts many visitors from all parts of the globe. The cathedral is also known as the Dom St. Marien or Cathedral of St Mary by the Germans.

Among the many noteworthy things in Freiberg Cathedral in Germany, the memorial of Maurice, the Elector of Saxony and the tombs of the rulers of Saxony, built by famous Saxonian sculptor Balthasar Permoser is worth seeing. Find some original instruments from the Renaissance period and appreciate the fine décor of the cathedral. The interior looks amazing with a rich collection of sculptures and epitaphs of the ducal house. The monumental brasses that forms the base of the quire and the Italian style paintings on the walls makes the cathedral look stunning to all who care to visit.

Another magnificent part of the Freiberg Cathedral is its Golden Gate built in Roman fashion. The gate is an arched portal made of sandstone and is decorated with highly ornamented columns and beautiful sculptures.

For music lovers, the special attraction in Dom St. Marien is the lovely organ by Gottfried Silbermann with 44 organ stops, 3 keyboards and 2574 organ pipes and the Silbermann organ.

The cathedral also boasts 6 church bells, out of which 4 are from the famous casting house at Hiliger. Große Susanneis the heaviest among all the bells and weighs 5 tons.

Following is the schedule:

November to April; 10 and 11 am, 2, 3 and 4 p.m.
May to October, tours start at 11 am.
Sundays are however exceptions.
