St Andreaskirche Hildesheim Germany

Germany has many beautiful churches among which The St Andreaskirche Church of Hildesheim catapults a large number of tourists every year. The church is nominated as the tallest church in the world with 114.5m towers. Visitors get a panoramic view of both the city and the surrounding countryside. The self confidence and prosperity of the people of Hildesheim is reflected in the magnificent architecture of the church.

In 1038, the Earthly remains of Bishop Godehard was brought to this church so that the people of Hildesheim could mourn his death. It was named for the Apostle Andreas (Andrew) which was a simple pre-Romanesque chapel. The church has always been the centre of attraction. It was during the Romanesque period that the centre of the market and workshop received a better site near St. Andreas , from the swampy lowlands between Domburg and Michaeliskriche ("Old Market"). But the church was given a modern west work which replaced the elegant Romanesque church. The construction of the tallest church was undertaken step by step. The building of the gothic church, in the basilica style and Romanesque west work, began at the end of the fourteenth century, the choir in 1389, the northern nave in 1404, and the tower in 1503. The tower which was completed at last became the pride of St. Andreaskirche, Germany. The influence of French architecture is visible in the interiors of the church. The choir and the radiating side chapels in the east were designed after the French cathedrals.

Besides having the tallest tower, the church also boasts of the largest organ in Northern Germany. The organ manufactured by the Beckerath company has 63 registers and 4734 pipes which fills the church with pleasant sound. The church organizes organ and choir concerts regularly.
In the year 1725, 1738, 1632, and 1963: St Andreas Church incorporated four bells in the tower, which measured:

1. 1963: 6.5 t 2.15 m diameter
2. 1632: 3.0 t 1.75 m diameter
3. 1738: 1.5 t 1.36 m diameter
4. 1725: 1.3 t 1.22 m diameter

In the Second World War the St. Andreaskirche church was burned down. But in 1950’s it was rebuilt, and the tourist now can view the exact replica of the church. Two other significant facts about the church are that, it is first church in Hildesheim to support Lutheranism and it supported the bourgeois self-confidence in the High Middle Ages.
