The Naumburg Cathedral Germany
The Naumburg Cathedral, Germany is one of the rare structures in Germany that has remained unaltered to a great extent since its construction in the early 13th century. Built between 1213 and 1250, the Naumburg Cathedral in Germany is a beautiful blend of the popular Romanesque and early Gothic architectural style.Though the construction of the church began by someone, it was completed by Bishop Dietrich II von Wettin. Later inorder to pay honor the noble families of Naumberg, Dietrich, a member of the noble family added an extra choir to the Naumburg Cathedral.
Researches reveal that the east rood-screen of the cathedral is the oldest German hall rood-screen that still exists here in its original and complete form. The other wall rood-screens that are present in the Naumburg Cathedral are examples of the highest order of art and architecture combined together. Beside these, the cathedral has some brilliant sculptures and figures, rare, original stained-glass panes from the medieval period and the relief images of Christ’s suffering. The gorgeous vegetable ornamentation also makes the interior of the cathedral look exceptionally rich and pretty. Also the prodigious statues of Christ, St John and the Virgin is worth mentioning.
Beside the architectural splendor, the line of 12 statues of the founders of the church present in the choir room is a sight to behold. The figures are carved out of limestone and are famous through out the world. Since the name of the creator of these figures could not be known, the master is referred to as the Naumburg Master by the Germans and is respected for his fine art work. It is believed that not only these figures but probably the western choir and other fine decorations are also done by this great artist. The most beautiful among the row of figures are the pairs of Ekkehard and Ura and Hermann and Reglindis.
The Naumburg Cathedral, Germany though was secularized soon after the introduction of the Reformation is now under the possession and administration of the Lutheran Chapterhouse. The cathedral is also regularly used for church services.
