The Alte Oper, Frankfurt was inaugurated on the 20th of October 1880 and was designed by Richard Lucae, a Berlin designer and was financed by the populace of Frankfurt. Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany was among the invited guests. He was so impressed by the Alte Oper building that he exclaimed: Das könnte ich mir in Berlin nicht erlauben which means I wouldn't dare build this in Berlin!
The Alte Oper, Frankfurt was so badly damaged by the World War II that it took a campaign by the citizens of Frankfurt to renovate it. After the year 1953, 15 million DM was collected, which was also not enough. The repair cost went up to 160 million DM. The Alte Oper, Frankfurt was reopened on the 28th of August 1981.
The Alte Oper, Frankfurt consists of the Grosse Saal, Large Hall, which has the seating capacity for 2,500 and the Mozart-Saal with 700 seats. There are smaller halls, which is used for conventions. This hall is now a regular venue for holding concerts and plays. The Alte Oper, Frankfurt is one of the most historical monuments in the city.
