Leipzig is a city in the state of Saxony and is situated at the meeting point of the Pleibe, White Elster and the Parthe Rivers. It has been the center of trade and commerce since the Middle Ages. The city is also home to one of the oldest and most prestigious of Europe’s Universities, the Leipzig University.


Interesting features: Leipzig is always teeming with a huge number of tourists, as there are plenty of places of tourist attractions in the city. Here are the names of some of the interesting places:

  •  The Thomaskirche or the Saint Thomas Lutheran Church is a major landmark of the city. It is here that Johann Sebastian Bach worked as a cantor. The choir of the church was founded in 1212 and is one of the most famous boys’ choirs in Germany.

  •  Völkerschlachtdenkmal, the towering war monument was built in 1913. The monument is a record of the historic Battle of Nations and it stands on the very ground of the battle. The monument is almost 91 meters high and it is supposed to be the tallest monument in Europe. If you climb up to the monument’s viewing platform, you will be able to have a panoramic view of the entire city. The architectural features of the monument bear resemblance with the Temple of Solomon.

  •  There is also the spectacular City Hall that is built upon the ruins of a historic castle.

  •  Städtisches Kaufhaus is a building that features innumerable shops, offices and restaurants.

  •  Leipzig is also home to the famous music festival, Wave-Gotik-Treffen. There are many band performances throughout the city. The music reveals medieval influence and this is why the festival is also known as the “dark culture” festival. The international festival for documented and animated film is also held here.

  •  There are plenty of museums and art centers in Leipzig as well and on the whole the city is an ideal tourist destination. It is a very old city full of historical memorabilia; drop in to discover its magic!
