INTRODUCTION:Hamburg is the home of German Theater. A need was therefore felt for the establishment of a theatre for non German speaking people. Two Americans, Robert Rumph and Clifford Dean, founded The English Theater of Hamburg in 1976.
The English Theater of Hamburg is a private theater developed in collaboration with the Hamburg Ministry of Culture. It was an effort to improve the cultural relationship with other countries of the world and to help international communication through English Language and art. As a member of the Deutscher Buhnenverein, the theater operates as a non profitable organization.
The English Theater of Hamburg started as a professional theater with the management responsibilities shared by the twin founders. They handled the direction of the theater and planning of the artistic programs. They presented a good number of presentations in different locations of the city of Hamburg. The theater had a hard time presenting the English plays. However, they found a temporary base in the region of Altona in Hamburg. It continued its operation till 1981.
In 1981, The English Theater of Hamburg, Hamburg found its permanent home in the premises at Mundsberg, which is very close to the Mundsburg Metro Station.
Since 1981 it has continued to direct English classics and plays witnessed by many English enthusiasts in Germany. The tourists from other parts of the world do give a visit to The English Theater of Hamburg for an entertaining evening or a daytime performance.
