Altonaer Museum
This museum showcases the growth and development of North Germany into a cultural
and economic powerhouse. The museum also tries to highlight the fact that fishing
has become an important economic factor and along with shipping it has contributed
to the growth and development of the economy in and around this region.
The Altonaer museum focuses on regional subjects mainly of North German subjects
and it claims to be one of the biggest regional museums in the whole of Germany.
The museum concentrates on certain regions of Germany like Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein
and the Lower Elbe Region.
Other than fishing and shipping that has been already mentioned before the museum also concentrates on areas such as navigation, craftsmanship, cultural, and city history along with art and Graphics belonging to North Germany. The museum also has a well stocked library with more than sixty thousand books on stuffs that are there in the museum.
The museum was initially founded in the middle of the nineteenth century as a private botanical museum until it was taken over by the city a couple of decades or so later. A new building was added to the whole set up by architects of Berlin named Reinhardt and Suessenguth. Quite a few outposts are connected with the museum including the Museum of middle-class Culture in the Jenisch-Haus, which is a Country Residence situated in the middle of Jenisch Park in Klein Flottbeck.
This regional museum is a top draw among the visitors and tourists and the numerous special collections attract people like anything. The museum remains open throughout the week except on Monday and if you want to check out the collections then you have to drop into the museum between 11:00 in the morning to about 18:00 clock in the evening. One can take guided tours to understand the museum better but that comes at an extra price.
