Hagenbecks Tierpark
Hagenbecks Tierpark is a hundred year old zoo at Lokstedt in Hamburg. Apart from being home to thousands of species of animals, the zoo also has a dolphin show, several restaurants, a tropical centre and a scenic recreation park.Hagenbecks Tierpark was established in 1863 by Carl Hagenbeck. It now covers an area of 25 hectares and includes rocky surroundings and enormous water holes to produce a simulation for the animal’s natural habitat. The visitors should note down the feeding time of the animals; also popular are the elephant and pony rides in the Zoo.
During long summer evenings, Hagenbecks Tierpark organizes special Jungle Nights which are extremely well received by the citizens of Hamburg and from outside. On such nights, the Zoo remains open till midnight and there ensues a wonderful extravaganza which comprises jugglers, belly dancers, acrobats and cowboy shows where the men try out amazing tricks of elephants, giraffes and zebras. The zoo, lit as brightly as daylight, together with the strange jungle sounds that are common at night produce a strange sensation.
For those visitors who like to go near the animals, they can visit the stroking enclosure where they can pet the dwarf and Owambo goat and even feed them grass. The visitors are not allowed to feed food which are against those prescribed by the zoo authorities.
Another popular attraction in Hagenbecks Tierpack is the Elephant Park Hagenbeck, which has been actively involved in the preservation of the Asiatic elephant. The Elephant Park pours a lot of resources into the research of Asiatic elephant’s breed and its habits.
Also arousing much interest and excitement is the Japanese Island. The Island has a beautiful garden with a nice pond. Flamingos, sump turtles and wassergeflugel frequent the waters of the pond.
