St Katharinen Kirche

INTRODUCTION:
St. Katherinen Kirche, Hamburg is one of the four medieval churches in the city of Hamburg. It is located in the southern part of the city on the other side of the Speicherstadt, the warehouse city of Hamburg. In 1651, when Neustadt integrated with Hamburg, the church became one of the four churches to be joined with the fifth St. Michaels Church. The other three being St. Petri built in 1195, St Nicholai in the same yearand St. Jacobi in the year 1255.

St Katherinen Kirche, Hamburg, was constructed in the 14th century with three naves. However the west façade was erected to stabilize the church tower. The churches interior is quite distinct with its huge round pillars that support the cross-shaped vault. The lofty middle nave gives an impression of a castle rooted in the ground. The exterior gives the view of a large country church.

St Katherinen Kirche lost about twenty thousand members from its congregation due to the development of the Hamburg’s Free Port zone and the Speicherstadt. This compelled the church community to search for new opportunities. Today the members are spread all over the city of Hamburg and the neighboring areas of Schleswig-Hollstein and Niedersachsen.

The church Mass is held every Thursday and Sunday for the entire Hamburg. Special events are organized on certain important occasions. Several musical events are organized from time to time.

St Katherinen Kirche, Hamburg is opened to tourists from Monday to Saturday between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.
