St Michaels Church

INTRODUCTION:
St Michaels Church is one of the most visited and popular among the 5 protestant churches in Hamsburg. The name is devoted to Archangel Michael. The 132 m high spire is the landmark in the city of Hamsburg.

The copper covered spire is an eye catcher for the tourist on the cruise in the Alster Lake. On the portal is the bronze statue depicting the archangel seizing the devil.
The current church building is the third one at the place. It has been destroyed and reconstruct on many occasions. Constructed in 1687, it was destroyed for the first time in 1750 by lightening. The present Church is the creation on the design by Johann Leonhard Prey and Earnst Georg Sonnin, which was completed in 1786. St Michaels Church, Hamburg was reconstructed twice in the twentieth century after being destroyed by a fire during the construction work and by bombings during the Second World War.
St Michaels Church, Hamsburg has a seating capacity of about 2500, which makes it the largest church in the city. The exquisite beauty of the church spire and its great elevation helps the tourist to have a good view of the city below and the Hamburg Harbor. It also has a lift to take people to the top.

Tourists can have a good view of the Church during a cruise along the Alster. To see the structure and view it closely, tourists will have to visit the southern part of Neustadt, between Ludwig-ErhardeStrabe, Krayenkamp and Englische Planke.

During the summer it is opened to the visitors from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm on all days except Sunday. On Sunday it opens at 11.30 am and closes at the same time. In Winter the duration is reduced from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm from Monday to Saturday and on Sunday the gate is opened to the visitors at 11.30 am and closes at 5.00 pm.
