History of Hanover
Hanover is a very important destination in Germany and for many years now has been a favorite with all tourists. All those who come visiting the place find it impossible to overlook the beauty associated with the place. However Hanover has always had a very interesting history like the numerous other places in Germany. Hanover has been derived from the name Honovere which literally meant ‘high bank’ and the town was actually located on the bank of the river Leine. Hanover at one point of time was only a village consisting of fishermen and ferrymen and it was only in the 13th century that Hanover was built into a town with churches and town gates.
It was in 1636 that the Duke of Calenberg had shifted his residence in Hanover and was later christened as the Duchy of Hanover. There were three kings in the United Kingdom who also became Electoral Princes of Hanover. On imposing the Convention of Artlenburg on July 5th 1803 Napoleon’s 30,000 French soldiers went onto occupy the grand city of Hanover. However there were a great number of soldiers in Hanover who ultimately went on to England and later took part in a very important and active war like the Battle of Waterloo.
Hanover in the Congress of Vienna
The Congress of Vienna in 1814 George III transformed the Electorate to the Kingdom of Hanover. However with the end of William IV’s reign it was decided that Hanover could be inherited only by males. After the kingdom was annexed by Prussia, Hanoverians went against the Prussian regime.
However Hanover continued to grow till the World War II but it was during that time that the town was actually devastated and ruined. However with the war coming to an end Hanover became a part of the new state of Lower Saxony in 1946.
Hanover has always been very popular as a tourist destination in Germany but more so probably because of its extremely interesting history. Hanover was always a very important place in Germany because of the innumerable events which took place here.
