Residenztheater Munich

Residenztheater Munich is the most famous theatre of Munich. It was built in 1753 and has played different roles throughout the ages. From 1751 to 1753 the residence theatre in the city was used as a stage for operas. The Bavarians used the stage mostly for Italian operas which incidentally was among their favorites. The magnificent building was built by the master craftsman of yards François de Cuvilliés d.Ä. The Residenztheater Munich was finely used as the performing stage for a long period of time. During the Second World War the theater was destroyed afterwards the renovation work was carried on that recovered the past glory of the theatre.

After the World War the theatre was reopened in 1951. Much of the destruction was instilled on the foundation walls of the theatre so a new structure was built which has been established as the modern Residenztheater of Munich. The present stage fairs better than its older version with much better facilities and an increased accommodation facility. As a matter of fact the capacity of the amphitheatre was almost doubled after the renovation. The stage technology was revamped and the state of the art equipments were implemented for enhancement of the performances. Architect Karl Hocheder and professor Adolf Linnebach were the responsible person for the improved stage technology. The theater can hold up to 1000 spectators at a time, indeed a massive environment.

The Residenztheater Munich is the home for the main play of the Bavarian state play. After the Second World War the theatre started operations with a production of Ferdinand Raimund named “the spendthrift” in 1951. Thereafter from 1 August 1988the arena was completely reconditioned and transformed according to the plans of Alexander baron von Brancas.

Presently, Residenztheater Munich is not just a theatre in Munich, it stands as a symbol for cultural headquarter of the city which displays the pride of the city.
