Munich the capital of Bavaria is one of the most popular cities of Germany. The city features an interesting combination of tradition and modernity. History of Munich reveals to you the rich heritage and tradition of this fabulous city.

Originally, the city was actually set up by Henry the Lion – the duke of Saxony and Bavaria. At the time of the Thirty Years War, the city was inhabited by the Swedish Gustavus II. It was in 1806 that the city was declared the capital of Bavaria. Munich prospered in art and culture during the rule of King Louis I, Maximilian II and King Louis II.

The World War I had a tremendous impact on the city. History of Munich states that there were agitation and upheavals everywhere. It was during this period when the city witnessed various political changes. Nazism or National Socialism was established then. Adolf Hitler constituted Munich as the headquarters of the Nazi party and in 1933 it acquired control over the German National Government. History of Munich also lets you know that the famous Munich Pact was signed in 1938. Munich was the ground for the White Rose which was a group of students who molded the Resistance Movement. The city was again adversely affected by the World War II. However, after 1945 it was recovered to a great extent.

Some of the matches in the 1974 World Cup and the 2006 World Cup were also hosted by the city of Munich. It was in this city where the German Chancellor nominee Edmund Stoiber has his center of authority. In 1992, Munich’s new airport was opened up for the people.

Today the city stands as one of the renowned tourist destinations. Every year tourists from all over the world visit the city. The warmth and hospitality of the people made this place more attractive.
