Angel of Peace (Friedensengel), MunichThe Angel of Peace monument is located at the downtown end of Prinzregentenstrasse near the upper east embarkment of the Isar. This monument was erected by the city of Munich in 1895-99 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the peace of Versailles (which ended the1870-71 France-Prussian War) and in honour of the Bavarian Army.
Rising above the terraces in the axis of the Prinzregentenstrasse is the 38-metre "Angel of Peace", which is the dominant feature of the park and is often regarded as a symbol of Munich.
The Angel of Peace, prominently situated on the, The monument consists of 23m/75ft Corinthian column surmounted by a gilded bronze figure of an angel, modelled on Athena, goddess of wisdom and peace, but also goddess of 'strategic' war, and she holds Nike in her hand, the goddess of victory. At the foot of the column a double staircase leads down to an open temple portico and terrace with a fountain by W. Zimmermann in 1891.
Heinrich Dull Georg Pezold and Max Heilmeier were the sculptors, Joseph Buhlmann supervising the construction. Originally cast in 1786, the angel was beautifully furbished up in 1981-83.
The round reliefs at the base of this monument depict some leading personalities of the former Kaiser Reich at the turn of the century, e.g. chancellor Bismarck and the generals Moltke, Roon and Von Der Tann. The gold mosaics in the hall nearby are allegorical representations of Peace and War, Victory and Blessing of Civilization.
The Friedensengel provides a spectacular view of the city, and is sited above a superb terrace. Driving by car along Prinzregentenstrasse you may circle this monument. You can park your car nearby and stroll around in the park that surrounds the monument. The nearby place to the park has a lot of expensive boutiques and chic hotels and restaurants.
