Karolinenplatz Munich

Karolinenplatz, Munich
Address:
Karolinenplatz, Maxvorstadt,
Munich, Bayern 80333 Germany

The Königsplatz (King's square) is a square in the inner city of Munich and together with the Karolinenplatz a part of the Brienner Strasse, one of the city's four royal avenues.

This unique star-shaped square, designed by Karl von Fischer, was created during the building of the Maxvorstadt, the part of the old town, which was built during the reign of Maximilian I. The buildings at the rear, designed to fit in with the square's shape, are particularly impressive. An obelisk designed and built by Leo von Klenze dating back to 1833 on Karolinenplatz was originally intended to be sited on Odeonsplatz. In 1833 it became clear to Crown Prince Ludwig that Karolinenplatz needed a strong focal point, and the 29m-high obelisk fitted the bill perfectly. It stands in the centre of the square, commemorating the 30,000 Bavarian soldiers who lost their lives in Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign- contains a number of metal plates made from melted down Bavarian cannons.

Karolinenplatz is a large square in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich. The area around Königsplatz is today the home to the Kunstareal, Munich's gallery and museum quarter.

It is located at the junctions of Briennerstraße and Barerstraße.
The Amerika Haus, at Karolinenplatz 3 is Where the American Consulate on Königinstraße deals mainly with beaurocratic issues; the purpose of the Amerika Haus is to focus on culture.

Karolinenplatz used to be the heart of Nazi Munich. Braune Haus, the Nazi headquarters, was located just down the street towards Königsplatz, the site of huge Nazi rallies. Two "Honor Temples" were erected at the east side for the remains of the sixteen Nazis who died in the 1923, but both temples were demolished after World War II. Two buildings of the Nazi party constructed by Paul Troost next to the temples still exist, in one of them the Munich Agreement was signed in 1938.
