Palace Square
Schlossplatz, or Palace Square as it is popularly called, is a fascinating site in which still lurk the remnants of the ancient regime that the square had housed. Located at the heart of Stuttgart, this corner of Stuttgart marvelously retains a quaint feel in the midst of a bustling modern city. It is this ancient and laidback charm which draws numerous visitors to the place as it offers a number of age old monuments and structures to relate the tales of its past.Palace Square gets its name from the two palaces which are housed in the historic site. The Altes Schloss, or the Old Palace dates back to 1330 from when it had been serving as a home to the royal families till the 1500s. The Second World War however, had ruined the ancient structure which had to be completely reconstructed before being opened to the public. The palace has been presently transformed to a museum to preserve the history of the Württemberg region.
The Neus Schloss, or the New Palace, stands sharp in contrast with the older one. Placed to the left of Altes Schloss, this structure has served as a royal residence in the early years of 1800. Built between 1746 and 1807, the building wears a different look as the architecture borrows some distinct French styles. In fact, the typical French look owes itself to the Duke of Wurttemberg who wanted this part of the city to reflect Versailles. The building therefore bears an exquisite Renaissance appearance transporting the visitors to a different land altogether. To the left of the palace is a picture perfect pond which flashes a tranquil reflection of the Stuttgart Opera House, only to be quivered by the swarm of ducks as they float by.
The Jubilee Column which had been raised in 1841 to mark 25 years of the reign of the erstwhile King Wilhelm I. Schlossplatz is dotted with a number of other neo classical building which add to the quaint old world charm of the square.
The square is today a popular tourist destination of Stuttgart, forever buzzing
