History of Stuttgart
The History of Stuttgart dates back to the 1st century AD when the Romans took over from Alemanni, the Germaic tribe who inhabited the area around Stuttgart. The Romans were followed by The Frankish Empire, the Carolingians and Charlemagne.The duchy of Swabia, took over the region comprising of Southern Germany and parts of Switzerland and France in the 9th Century AD. The Holy Roman Empire took over Swabia under its regime but Swabia, continued to enjoy independence during the reign of Konrad III, who later became the king of the Holy Roman Empire.
The name Stuttgart is derived from Stuotgarten, a stud farm founded in 950 by Duke Liudolf von Schwaben. The growth and development of the area gave it the status of a city. The Wurttemberg took over the city from Swabia and made it their capital in the 15the century.
Struggle for power infested the area throughout the mediaeval period. The 30 years war crippled the city. King Wilhelm started the annual Cannstatter Festival in 1818 as a reward to his people who braved a long period of famine.
The twin discovery of petrol engine by Gottleib Daimler and the spark plug by Robert Bosch revolutionized Stuttgart. 19th century witnessed a rapid industrialization in the area. Wurttember join the unified Germany in 1871.
The city was devastated by several air raids during the Second World War However, it was quickly restored and Stuttgart became the capital of the State of Baden Wurttemberg.
Situated on the banks of the Neckar River, Stuttgart is the most industrialized and the third most densely populated area of Germany. Today it is one of the most important economic regions with a good share of Gross Domestic Product in the country. The Stuttgart region is the first region of Germany to have its own directly elected parliament assembly.
