Amid the spectacular mountain scenery of Lantau Island is seated the world's tallest bronze Buddha. Big Buddha, Hong Kong also known as Tian Tan Buddha or Giant Buddha, is located at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island in Hong Kong. A proof of the harmonious relationship between man and nature, people and religion, the statue of Big Buddha is located near Po Lin Monastery.Big Buddha, Hong Kong sits on a lotus atop Ngong Ping plateau. Weighing 250 tones this majestic figure of Tian Tan Buddha is 34 meters high. It took over 10 years to complete the statue, and was opened for public viewing in 1993 accompanied by deeply religious ceremonies. Visitors and pilgrims have to climb 268 stairs to reach the platform where the Big Buddha of Hong Kong is seated. The statue is surrounded by eight smaller bronze statues.
It took about three years to finish the construction of Big Buddha, Hong Kong. Started in 1990, this enormous construction ended on the birthday of Sakyamuni, December 29th, 1993. It was formed with 202 separate pieces of bronze and steel framework to give strength to the statue from inside.
Various figures of gods and other colorful manifestation of the Buddhist religion are the other attractions of Po Lin Monastery, besides the Giant Buddha statue. The monastery is located at a height of 520-metre amidst spectacular mountain surroundings. You can also climb up to Lantau Peak from here, which is 934 meter high.
Big Buddha, Hong Kong, can be reached by bus or taxi, after traveling to Mui Wo. Bus marked Po Lin monastery will drop you at the monastery stop from Mui Wo. And if you want to travel by a more exciting way, then you must take the route of Cable-Car. The monastery remains open on every weekday. Entry to the monastery is free. The Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Peak, and Big Buddha, Hong Kong are visited by Buddhists from all over the world. This magnificent creation shall not be missed while on a trip to Hong Kong, China.
